Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live,
and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die.”
John 11:25-26

Guidelines
The following are the Funeral Rites:
- VIGIL FOR THE DECEASED is the principal rite celebrated by the Christian community in the time following death and before the Funeral Mass. It is usually celebrated in the funeral home when family and friends gather around the coffin.
- FUNERAL MASS is the central liturgical celebration of the Christian community for the deceased.
- RITE OF COMMITTAL is the final prayer of the community of faith. It may be celebrated at the grave, tomb, or niche and used for burial at sea. Planning for the Catholic Funeral Rites should be made directly with the parish.

- It is Catholic practice to have Masses said for the departed. Usually, families do a trio (3), a novena (9), or gregorian masses (30) as well as a mass of the one-month anniversary and every year on the anniversaries of the date of death. Masses celebrated have infinite value for the deliverance of the soul from purgatory. To request masses, fill out the Mass intentions Form.
Readings
1st Reading - Old Testament
Is 25, 6,7-9
A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah 25: 6a, 7-9
The Lord God will destroy death for ever.
On this mountain the Lord of host will provide for all peoples.
On this mountain he will destroy the veil that veils all peoples,
The web that is woven over all nations; he will destroy death forever.
The Lord God will wipe away the tears from all faces;
The reproach of his people he will remove from the whole earth;
for the Lord has spoken.
On that day it will be said: “Behold our God, to whom we looked to save us!
This is the Lord for whom we looked;
let us rejoice and be glad that he has saved us!”
The word of the Lord.
Job 19 1, 23-27
A reading from the book of Job 19: 1, 23-27
I know that my Redeemer lives.
Job answered and said:
Oh, would that my words were written down!
Would that they were inscribed in a record:
That with an iron chisel and with lead
they were cut in the rock forever!
But as for me, I know that my Vindicator lives,
and that he will at last stand forth upon the dust;
Whom I myself shall see:
my own eyes, not another’s, shall behold him,
And from my flesh I shall see God;
my inmost being is consumed with longing.
The word of the Lord.
Wisdom 3, 1-6
A reading from the book of Wisdom 3: 1-6, 9
He accepted them as a holocaust.
The souls of the just are in the hands of God,
and no torment shall touch them.
They seemed, in the view of the foolish, to be dead;
and their passing away was thought an affliction
and their going forth from us, utter destruction.
But they are in peace.
For if before men, indeed, they be punished,
yet is their hope full of immortality;
Chastised a little, they shall be greatly blessed,
because God tried them
and found them worthy of himself.
As gold in the furnace, he proved them,
and as sacrificial offerings he took them to himself.
Those who trust in him shall understand truth,
and the faithful shall abide with him in love:
Because grace and mercy are with his holy ones,
and his care is with his elect.
The word of the Lord.

and shall dart about as sparks through stubble;
They shall judge nations and rule over peoples,
and the Lord shall be their King forever.
Those who trust in him shall understand truth,

Because grace and mercy are with his holy ones,

Wisdom 4, 7-15
A reading from the book of Wisdom 4: 7-15
A blameless life is a ripe old age.
The just man, though he die early, shall be at rest.
For the age that is honorable comes not with the passing of time,
nor can it be measure in terms of years.
Rather, understanding is the hoary crown for men,
and an unsullied life, the attainment of old age.
He who pleased God was loved;
he who lived among sinners was transported--
Snatched away, lest wickedness pervert his mind
or deceit beguile his soul;
For the witchery of paltry things obscures what is right
and the whirl of desire transforms the innocent mind.
Having become perfect in a short while, he reached the fullness of
a long career;
for his soul was pleasing to the Lord,
therefore he sped him out of the midst of wickedness.
But people saw and did not understand,
nor did they take this into account.
Because grace and mercy are with his holy ones,
and his care is with his elect.
The word of the Lord.

Psalm 23
Psalm 23
R/. The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.
The Lord is my shepherd;
there is nothing I shall want.
Fresh and green are the pastures
where he gives me response.
Near restful waters he leads me,
to revive my drooping spirit. R/.
He guides me along the right path;
he is true to his name.
If I should walk in the valley of darkness
no evil would I fear.
You are there with your crook and your staff;
with these you give me comfort. R/.
You have prepared a banquet for me
in the sight of my foes.
My head you have anointed with oil;
my cup is overflowing. R/.
Surely goodness and kindness shall follow me
all the days of my life.
In the Lord’s own house shall I dwell
for ever and ever R/.
Psalm 25
Psalm 25
R/. May the angels lead you into paradise; may the martyrs come to welcome you and take you to the holy city, the new and eternal Jerusalem.
To you, O Lord, I lift my soul.
I trust you, let me not be disappointed,
Those who hope in you shall not be disappointed,
but only those who wantonly break faith. R/.
Lord, make me know your ways.
Lord, teach me your paths.
Make me walk in your truth, and teach me:
for you are God my savior. R/.
In you I hope all day long
because of your goodness, O Lord.
Remember your mercy, Lord.
and the love you have shown from of old.
Do not remember the sins of my youth.
In your love remember me. R/.
The Lord is good and upright.
He shows the path to those who stray,
he guides the humble in the right path;
he teaches his way to the poor. R/.
His ways are faithfulness and love
for those who keep his covenant and will.
Lord, for the sake of your name
forgive my guilt; for it is great. R/.
Psalm 27
Psalm 27
R. The Lord is my light and my salvation.
The Lord is my light and my help;
whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life;
before whom shall I shrink? R.
R. The Lord is my light and my salvation.
There is one thing I ask of the Lord,
for this I long,
to live in the house of the Lord,
all the days of my life,
to savor the sweetness of the Lord;
to behold his temple. R.
R. The Lord is my light and my salvation.
O Lord, hear my voice when I call;
have mercy and answer.
It is your face, O Lord, that I seek;
hide not your face. R.
R. The Lord is my light and my salvation.
I am sure I shall see the Lord’s goodness
in the land of the living.
Hope in him, hold firm and take heart.
Hope in the Lord! R.
R. The Lord is my light and my salvation.
Psalm 103
Psalm 103
R. The Lord is kind and merciful.
The Lord is compassion and love,
slow to anger and rich in mercy.
He does not treat us according to our sins
nor repay us according to our faults. R/.
As a father has compassion on his sons,
the Lord has pity on those who fear him;
for he knows of what we are made,
he remembers that we are dust. R/.
As for man, his days are like grass.
he flowers like the flower of the field;
the wind blows and he is gone
and his place never sees him again. R/.
But the love of the Lord is everlasting
upon those who hold him in fear;
his justice reaches out to children’s children
when they keep his covenant in truth. R/.

2 Cor 4, 14.5, 1
A reading from the second letter of Paul to the Corinthians 4: 14-5:1
What is seen is transitory; what is unseen is eternal.
We know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and place us with you in his presence. Everything indeed is for you, so that the grace bestowed in abundance on more and more people may cause the thanksgiving to overflow for the glory of God.
Therefore, we are not discouraged; rather, although our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this momentary light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to what is seen but to what is unseen; for what is seen is transitory, but what is unseen is eternal.
For we know that if our earthly dwelling, a tent, should be destroyed, we have a building from God, a dwelling not made with hands, eternal in heaven.
The word of the Lord.
2 Cor 5, 1.6-10
A reading from the second letter of Paul to the Corinthians 5: 1,6-10
We have an everlasting home in heaven.
e know that if our earthly dwelling, a tent, should be destroyed, we have a building from God, a dwelling not made with hands, eternal in heaven.
So we are always courageous, although we know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, for we walk by faith, not by sight. Yet we are courageous, and we would rather leave the body and go home to the Lord. Therefore, we aspire to please him, whether we are at home or away. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive recompense, according to what he did in the body, whether good or evil.
The Word of the Lord.
Romans 5, 5-11
A reading from the letter of Paul to the Romans 5: 5-11
Having been justifies by his blood, we will be saved from God’s anger through him.
Hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us. For Christ, while we were still helpless, yet died at the appointed time for the ungodly. Indeed, only with difficulty does one die for a just person, though perhaps for a good person one might even find courage to die. But God prove his love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us. How much more then, since we are now justified by his blood, will we be saved through him from the wrath. Indeed, if, while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, how much more, once reconciled, will we be saved by his life. Not only, that, but we also boast of God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.
The word of the Lord.
Romans 6, 3-4.8-9
A reading from the letter of Paul to the Romans 6: 3-4, 8-9
Let us walk in newness of life.
Are you unaware that we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were indeed buried with him through baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live in newness of life. If, then, we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him. We know that Christ, raised, from the dead, dies no more; death no longer has power over him.
The word of the Lord.
Romans 6, 3-9
A reading from the letter of Paul to the Romans 6: 3-9
Let us walk in newness of life.
Are you unaware that we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were indeed buried with him through baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live in newness of life. For if we have grown into union with him through a death like his, we shall also be united with him, so that our sinful body might be done away with, that we might no longer be slavery to sin. If, then, we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him. We know that Christ, raised, from the dead, dies no more; death no longer has power over him.
The word of the Lord.
Romans 8, 31-39
A reading from the letter of Paul to the Romans 8: 31b-35, 37-39
Who can ever come between us and the love of Christ?
If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but handed him over for us all, how will he not also give us everything else along with him? Who will bring a charge against God’s chosen ones? It is God who acquits us. Who will condemn? It is Christ Jesus who died, rather, was raised, who also is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us.
What will separate us from the love of Christ? Will anguish, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or the sword? No, in all these things we conquer overwhelmingly through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor present things, nor future things, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
The word of the Lord.
Romans 8, 31b-35, 37-39

Romans 14, 7-12
A reading from the letter of Paul to the Romans 14, 7-9, 10b-12
Whether alive or dead, we belong to the Lord?
None of us lives for oneself, and no one dies for oneself. For if we live, we live for the Lord, and if we die, we die for the Lord; so then, whether we live or die, we are the Lord´s. For this is why Christ died and came to life, that he might be Lord of both the dead and the living. For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of God; for it is written:
“As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bend before me, and every tongue shall give praise to God.”
So then each of us shall give an account of himself to God.
The word of the Lord.
Thes 4, 13-18
A reading from the letter of Paul to the Thessalonians 4: 13-18
We shall stay with the Lord forever.
We do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, about those who have fallen asleep so that you may not grieve like the rest, who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose so too will God, through Jesus, bring with him those who have fallen asleep.
Indeed, we tell you this, on the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord. Will surely not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself, with a word of command, with the voice of an archangel and with the trumpet of God, will come down from heaven, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Thus we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore, console one another with these words.
The Word of the Lord.
Timothy 4, 6-8
A reading from The Second Epistle of St. Paul to Timothy 4: 6-8
For I am already being poured out like a libation, and the time of my departure is at hand.
I have competed well; I have finished the race; I have kept the faith.
From now on the crown of righteousness awaits me, which the Lord, the just judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me, but to all who have longed for his appearance.
The word of the Lord.

Is 25, 6,7-9
Destruirá la muerte para siempre;
de quien esperábamos que nos salvara;

El justo, aunque muera prematuramente, hallará descanso;
Vivía entre pecadores, y Dios se lo llevó;

Are catholic cemeteries the only places where a catholic may be buried, entombed in a mausoleum or columbarium?
No, but there is spiritual reason to consider the Catholic Cemeteries. Throughout the year, each of the Archdiocese of Miami’s two cemeteries has a regularly scheduled Mass to remember and pray for all who are buried in our Cemeteries. In addition, our bishops celebrate Mass at the Catholic Cemeteries on All Souls Day and Memorial Day.

Does the catholic church allow cremation?
Yes, the Funeral Rites of the Church may be held in the presence of the cremated remains of the deceased. The cremated remains of a body should be treated with the same respect given to the human body from which they come. This includes the use of a worthy vessel to contain the ashes, the manner in which they are carried and their final disposition. Cremated remains should be buried in a grave or entombed in a mausoleum or columbarium.
The practice of scattering cremated remains on the sea, from the air, or on the ground, or keeping the remains at home of the deceased are not the reverend disposition that the Church requires.
Cremation
Opinion: The Church has done us a favor clarifying the issue of cremated remains
A man holds an urn at a funeral parlor in Rome, Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2016. The Vatican on Tuesday published guidelines for Catholics who want to be cremated, saying their remains cannot be scattered, divvied up or kept at home but rather stored in a sacred, church-approved place. When Abuelita died we had a wake that lasted late into the night. Her children and grandchildren sat by her open casket, praying and sometimes dozing, as mourners came and went at the funeral parlor, eating pastelitos and drinking coffee. In the morning we accompanied her, in a long cortege, to her funeral mass, and from there to the peaceful cemetery. We honored her, mourned her, and said our farewells, as lovingly and respectfully as we possibly could.
The Church has done us all a favor by clarifying these things and reminding all of us why the rituals around dying and burial are so significant. In them we show what we believe about the meaning and transcendence of life and how much we value every part of the person of our beloved departed. — Dr. Grazie Pozo Christie
The Catholic Church knows that grief and loss come to all of us, and that we need to take the time to mourn properly, and say our good-byes with the solemnity our grief calls for. And they also know that what we do with the remains of the ones we love is significant and instructive. The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith has issued specific guidelines on how it is best and proper to treat the dead and their remains. And it’s not only about tradition and long-standing practice, but about what our actions mean.
The foundation of the Church’s preference for a solemn funeral and Christian burial is based on the counterintuitive belief that death has a positive meaning. That is because it is really a moment of transition to a new life, not an ending.
“The confidence of Christians is the resurrection of the dead; believing this we live.” Therefore, it is not something to run away from in terror, but something to acknowledge as a difficult moment that must be lived through with dignity and hope. Hope is on the other side of the mourning, like dawn is on the other side of night.
An honorable, solemn burial in sacred ground then is the “most fitting way to express faith and hope in the resurrection of the body.” The burial confirms and illustrates this faith, and as importantly, dignifies the human body as integral part of the identity and personhood of the one we mourn. Burial in a sacred place indicates piety and respect.
It stands opposed to the modern objectification of the body and the way cremation and scattering seems to erase that essential part of the departed. It is such a mark of respect and love, for Christians, that “burying the dead” is one of the corporal works of mercy. And the moment must be communal and accompanied, as privacy tends to minimize the event and the meaning of death.
The Church specifies that cremation may be used if there are practical reasons to eschew burial and if it is not done casually and out of indifference. In fact, if the deceased wishes to be cremated as a negation of the faith, then a Christian funeral is probably not appropriate. If the person can be properly cremated, then the document specifies that the funeral rite should be complete and the ashes must be laid to rest in sacred ground, just as a body is.
No shelves at home, mementos or scatterings — which would give an appearance of nihilism or pantheism. Proper burial of ashes “prevents the faithful departed from being forgotten, or their remains from being shown a lack of respect.” Proper burial, whether of ashes or the body, also gives us a place to visit pray for the souls of our beloved, on significant days like All Soul’s Day, or El Dia de los Muertos.
The Church has done us all a favor by clarifying these things and reminding all of us why the rituals around dying and burial are so significant. In them we show what we believe about the meaning and transcendence of life and how much we value every part of the person of our beloved departed. In them we find a way to mourn when it’s time to mourn, and then, if we are so fortunate to have faith, to hope with all our hearts for resurrection and reunion.
